Nea Kessani
The History of Nea Kessani Xanthi
The village of Nea Kessani is an authentic refugee village, created in early 1923 by refugees from Eastern Thrace and its first name was “Plastiria”. In December 1928, its population increased and its character was definitively shaped with the arrival of several refugees from Northern Thrace, Eastern Rumelia. Here you will find information about the history of the village, the customs and traditions of its inhabitants, their material and social life, their music and vocabulary, etc. The texts, as well as the photographic material, come from
the book entitled “Nea Kessani – Crafts, History and Folklore” (Spanidis Publications, 2015), by the philologist, Despina Fylachtaki, who comes from the village and who used mainly the testimonies of its residents to write the book.
